What You Need To Know About Using Insulated Concrete Forms

February 18, 2012 · Filed Under construction · Comment

Using insulated concrete forms or ICF is something very common today in construction and you need to understand a few facts about them. You will now see them in both commercial and residential properties. They are created when dry blocks are stacked together and later concrete is poured in them which makes them stronger in all situations.

These forms are used for both interior and exterior walls which means that you can easily have the best quality walls possible. The concrete that is pumped into them works like insulation so the buildings and houses are more energy efficient. There are many benefits over making this choice when considering a project over the previously more common choice of wood.

These walls are made considerably stronger than other choices. Plus they can help keep you healthy since it is unlikely that allergens or molds would be able to live in or pass through them. You will also notice that they offer a quieter indoor environment since they are great for keeping out unwanted noises so that you can rest more comfortably.

If you choose to have this type of wall then you are going to learn how much more efficient they are with concrete being the insulating barrier to the outside. It is going to be easier to keep the property cool when it is hot outside and easier to keep the property warm when it is cold outside. You could even cut the cost of your heating and cooling bills by anywhere from fifty to eighty percent.

You will have the safest home when this is your choice. This means that you can have a home that will stand strong during two hundred hour per mile winds. Plus it will not catch on fire for up to three and a half hours. If you are uncertain you can read about home that were built in this style that actually have stayed standing during a variety of natural disasters, including both tornadoes and hurricanes.

You can use this type of building practice anywhere so it is not specific to one region or location. It is currently being used throughout the United States from the east coast to the west coast. There are not a lot of weather conditions or anything else that will make these properties fall down.

There are few repairs that you will need to perform to this home since the structure is going to be so much sturdier than any other option available at this time. Water is not a problem because you are not going to see concrete rot like you could with wood. In addition it has easier upkeep that you can also appreciate since you are really not going to have to do as much work as you normally would with a property.

There are many different types of ways for using insulated concrete forms. These can be made out of standard concrete blocks, raw or green materials, and even concrete that has been mixed together with wood. Some of them can also be built from materials that have all been recycled. In addition the materials that are used are also recyclable when finished.

Why Energy Efficiency Can Continuously Save You Money

January 28, 2012 · Filed Under construction · Comment

Energy efficiency has become one of the most discussed topics at the government level and amongst the general populace. This is because of the crucially important bearing it will have over the quality of life experienced by future generations, and because of the fact that everyone can do something to contribute. There are new energy efficient appliances which use far less energy in achieving the same objective, and there are building materials which can greatly reduce fuel consumption.

With all of that in mind the sad fact is that most homes currently aren’t energy efficient whatsoever. Not only do men and women usually use incandescent bulbs in their home, they’re also careless in their use and leave lights on in rooms whenever no-one is utilizing them. They will normally put a lot more water in a kettle than they are actually intending to use, causing a waste of unnecessary electricity. Usually, the home heating system is going to be set too high, leading to more power getting used than is actually needed. All of these are easy matters to correct, and can be corrected for free, so this really should obviously be done before any thought is given to spending dollars on saving energy.

Obviously if you’ll be able to begin at the start with the building of the house you will be able to accomplish the level of efficiency you are searching for immediately. Using building materials which provide insulation, and which keep generated heat inside the building, is going to cut costs yearly and save fuel consumption at the same time. Using the appropriate materials to insulate doors and windows is important because the heat loss is through one of these. Low-E glass must be used in brand-new construction and you’ll find now standards set for window glass by the federal government.

Even if you are in an older building and do not have the option to completely reconstruct your home, there is still much that you can do in the way of renovations. If your windows are letting heat escape from the house and leading to excessive fuel bills, this can be remedied with a window replacement. Although this is a relatively expensive and time consuming job, it will save you the greatest amount of money in the long term. There are tax credits available which can help with the initial expense of having replacement windows installed, but if the job is still to expensive and difficult, storm windows can have at least a partial effect.

If the construction of your home is fundamentally sound, with insulated walls and the most energy efficient doors and windows you can fit, the amount of fuel you consume will be greatly reduced. At this level, it will be determined mainly by the energy efficiency of the appliances you use. If you can fit a heating boiler which achieves the same effect but which uses far less fuel you will be saving even more money every year. Other domestic appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and stoves can be far cheaper to run if you buy recent models as technology is constantly improving.

One of the most extreme methods of saving money is to have solar panels fitted to your home. Although this may be an extreme tactic now, it is likely to become increasingly popular in the future as the photovoltaic panels increase in efficiency. The energy from the sun is renewable and should be used whenever it is appropriate and cost effective. Solar energy is likely to become a staple source of power in the years to come, but even now it can play a part in saving fossil fuel consumption.

Cars or trucks are still the most important contributor to greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emitted into the environment, and technology is available to lessen this. Electric cars are an option today but not always a realistic one as they are limited on how far they can easily go. Those who use them usually live in key cities where it’s easy to locate a plug in source and the distance traveled day-to-day is not a lot. Hybrids, cars which utilize both electric and gas, are much more typical and practical.

There is more information concerning energy efficiency available today than ever before, and the vast majority of it is available for free via the Internet. Governments throughout the world are acutely aware of the importance of this issue, and have published extensive guidelines to help people conserve energy. Reading these will give you a good start in cutting down your fuel consumption and saving money at the same time, and you can then go on to deeper research to find out how you can achieve even greater savings. You can improve the quality of your life by implementing advice on energy efficiency.

Make sure you check out some other energy efficiency tips as it will significantly infuence the quality of life for future generations

Building With Insulated Concrete Forms

January 22, 2012 · Filed Under construction · Comment

Making use of insulated concrete forms is a very simple method of construction that has many advantages compared to wood frame building. The structure is more robust and durable and has a higher degree of insulation. The technique is not very complicated and can be learned quickly too.

All of the walls of the house can be created in a two stage process. First the formwork is created using lightweight insular panels. Reinforcing steel rebar is placed inside the gap which is then filled with concrete. After it sets the panels are left in place to create efficient insulation against noise and heat. They also provide perfect channeling for electrical wiring and water pipes as they are easy to cut into.

This type of construction can cost up to 40% less than traditional types of building. There are fewer stages to be completed and they are simpler so would require less labor. Because the materials are more durable it is also likely to last longer.

If the construction process is above grade it can be slightly more expensive. In the long run there will be lower costs for heating and cooling due to a higher degree of insulation so this more than makes up for the small additional cost. Because this type of building is more durable it will also have a higher resale value.

The panels that are used are light weight and easy to handle. They are interlocking which keeps them in place during and after construction. Either a single material is used like polystyrene or polyurethane foam or polystyrene beads or wood fibers can be bonded in cement. These all form very effective thermal and acoustic insulation.

Once the formwork is in place the concrete has to be poured in one or two foot rises so that there is not too much outward pressure. If it was poured in one stage there would be too much pressure at the bottom and the form would just blow out. To prevent honeycombing and air pockets a vibrator should be used to agitate the poured mixture.

When the concrete has set and all the electrical and plumbing channels have been laid then the walls can be finished with gypsum board or some kind of coating. On the outside walls you could also finish of with brickwork or siding. Polystyrene on outside walls should be treated with insecticide and waterproofed if it will be exposed to the elements at all.

There should be no gaps between the walls and floor slab or between any of the walls. This improves insulation but it also means that insects can’t get in. The walls are also not susceptible to boring insects like wood is. This means that there are many advantages of this type of construction over wood frame houses.

On the downside it is more difficult to do alterations and change doorways and windows. Once you have cut openings however they don’t normally require additional reinforcement. Overall insulated concrete forms constitute a better investment while at the same time creating a more comfortable home.

Just as today in the world at these times there has been types of encouragement to successfully make a change in the world and environment by becoming and going green.

This is the next enlightenment, the style of setting up new standards for energy efficient illumination of streetscapes. A highly skilled design team that has definitely succeeded during this process of illuminating the Fulton Mall Streetscape in New York City through a real good sustainable system of streetlights in a scheme that’s been so powerful it has by now also led to the massive development of a completely new streetlight option in the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Street Design Manual.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation, Department of Transportation, in addition to HLB Lighting Design team seem to have been working hard real difficult together throughout the entirely means of developing for this enlightening vision top get an exciting new fresh encounter towards urban realm also to beautify the region and as well as to maximize community interaction and communication and the utilization of public areas inside of the city. Typically the main and one of the most important primary complications encountered with the structure team would be to shed light on both the pedestrian pavements and street through fare through a single entity. A better solution was an energy-efficient luminaire compromised of a single pole with two heads, even which will cuts down on large number of fixtures inside of the venue of the Fulton Mall Streetscape and that which often produces a cleaner street profile. General contractors in Los Angeles have also already taken the initiative to create some sort of project like this in some sort of way to help and improve the community.

Plus the pedestrian side within the whole fixture also illuminates the facades from the adjacent buildings the fact that frame the street, putting vertical light to the retail corridor. Every pole is equipped with banner capabilities to help create the uniform signage for the streetscape including a green colored LED marker light at the top, that which gives a sense of rhythm as visitors look down the retail corridor.

HLB Associate Principle, Lee Brandt explains: “The challenge of working with so many city offices resulted in something the Economic Development Corporation, Department of Transportation, the Arts Commission and the Mayor’s office all recognize and are proud of. They were open to the recommendation for a pole that was not part of the Department of Transportation standards because the design team was able to show the value that such a light fixture would bring the street and the retail.” Make sure to learn more about preventing a community project of energy efficiency through unlicensed contractors in Los Angeles.

Buying The Right Number Of Solar Panels

January 15, 2009 · Filed Under construction · Comment

With the concerns about global warming, today it’s definitely a great idea to start thinking about using solar energy in your home. Using residential solar panels is a wonderful way that you can do something for the environment yourself. You’ll be able to lighten the footprint that you leave on the environment when you choose this type of power.

If you are looking to put up a solar energy system in your home, you’ll want to make sure you can make a set of panels that will last a long time. Here are a few tips about how to choose solar panels and what you should look for in residential solar panels.

The size of the solar panels is important so that you have a suitable amount of power for your house. The amount of electricity certain solar panels produce is expressed in watts. It is is actually a rate of electricity production in watts/hour.

As said above, the wattage rating is directly related to the size. The higher the wattage rating, the bigger the solar panel will have to be. You’ll want panels which can produce enough energy to power your home and all of the appliances, etc. which will be in regular use within it. Of course, the higher the wattage of the panels, the larger the price tag is likely to be.

You may also want to choose a newer set of residential solar panels with high efficiency. These will be much smaller, but they may be slightly more expensive. If you have the room, you might want to go for less efficient panels that cost less - you should try to strike a balance so that you get as much energy as you need but don’t pay too much.

Warranties are also important when choosing a solar panel array. This will guarantee the durability of the panels so that you get what you paid for.

Take a look at the warranty. Many come with 10 year warranties. If this is the only warranty it comes with, make sure it will pay for itself in that time. However, in many cases the solar panels that come with a 25 year warranty are the better option for you.

The cost of solar panels is still relatively high compared to that of traditional energy sources and even most renewable energies such as wind power. They are low-maintenance, however and once installed you know your investment is ensured. You can also get grants from the government in many countries that will cut your costs for you.

Take a look at the big picture. Don’t just think about the up front cost, but consider the overall cost and how the economic payback is going to be. If you’ll save money in the long run, then it’s a great deal.

Things to Consider When Building Your Own Wind Turbine

January 12, 2009 · Filed Under construction · Comment

Today you’ll find that electricity is getting more and more expensive. As prices rise, more and more people are beginning to consider alternative forms of energy. More and more people today are beginning to use various types of energy allowing them to save on energy bills in a big way.

One way that you can save money on your electricity costs is to build your own wind turbine. Wind power is an endlessly renewable, free source of energy - all that is needed is to take advantage of it. When building your own wind turbine, there are a few things you should think about ahead of time.

You’ll want to know where your wind turbine is going to go. You have to look for a place where there will be the maximum amount of wind energy, of course. It is ideal if you have at least an acre of land, and your wind turbine tower is higher than anything else in the area.

There can’t be any obstructions like trees or other towers that will obstruct the flow of wind to your turbine. Remember, even your turbine is in front of them in the direction of the wind, the wind speed will still be reduced due to the fact that they’re there. Take a careful look before you start building to make sure you have a good place to put it.

You’ll also want to look into any applicable regulations and permits needed before you start to build a wind turbine. You certainly don’t want to build your turbine and set it up only to find out later that this violates a local ordinance or that you lack the necessary permit - this can be costly. Do your homework ahead of time here and make sure that you are going about things in a way which complies with the applicable regulations in your municipality.

After the preliminary research is done, make a list of all the building materials you’ll need to start.

Finally, if you are using a plan for building your wind turbine, make sure to follow the instructions to the letter. You can find detailed plans both online and in many books. A turbine which is properly built is going to perform much better than one which is simply slapped together with fingers crossed.

It’s really not all that difficult to build your own wind turbine, provided you remember to make sure that all of these elements are in place before you get started. Find the best location, ensure that you are not running afoul of any regulations, assemble all of the needed supplies and find a detailed plan to follow in building your turbine. Once done, you’ll start seeing a big savings on your energy bill in short order.

Alternative energy sources are becoming more desirable as the cost of fossil fuels rise and more people are concerned about the future availability of these fuels. Additionally, many people are choosing more environmentally friendly energy choices that are renewable, free and don’t produce harmful emissions.

If you are considering alternative energy sources as a way to get off the grid or just to reduce your energy costs, you may want to consider building a wind turbine generator. This will provide you a way to go green and save you money.

When deciding to build alternative energy plants yourself, you need to consider several things about where you intend to place them. These include zoning laws, the neighborhood, how much land you have and how obstructed it is, and how much power you want to generate.

If you have a lot of energy blowing through your backyard, the amount of power a wind power generator can create may surprise you. If you make an efficient generator from good plans, you can save a large chunk of your energy bill each month.

They can then earn money by selling the surplus energy to local power companies. This doesn’t require any special gear - you just need to be wired into the grid. Your energy meter will start spinning backwards as you feed power into the grid.

Some people end up with only a turbine or two because of zoning restrictions or backyard size restrictions, but you can still manage to save a large amount of your power bill.

Upwards of 50% of your energy bill can be saved by building a wind turbine that might only cost a $100-$200 to make. It can also be put up in a matter of a week or two, depending on how much time you want to put in. The components of a turbine are actually very basic, you just need to know what to do.

A wind turbine requires very little maintenance, and you can mount one on a single pole located in your yard. It can help you decrease your power costs by a decent amount every month.
